Sjótækni‘s report on the use of Humidur

Last year, Sjótækni received a research grant from Vegagerðin to gain experience of using the substance Humidur in Icelandic conditions. The material Humidur is manufactured by the company Acotec in Belgium and has been used all over the world in the repair of ports, bridges, windmills and other structures as well as its use in the oil and gas industry. The material Humidur was developed by Acotec with minimal environmental impact and good durability to the target in any kind of aquatic environment. It can withstand salt water and sludge as well as being used in tanks for drinking water, oil and various chemical products. Humidur is free of solvents, heavy metals, tar and volatile organic compounds and has proven to be a very environmentally friendly and strong material that requires little or no maintenance after it has been covered. It stops the destruction caused by organic destroyers without killing the organisms that cause the destruction and thus significantly prolongs the life of the structure. Humidur has a 10-year warranty, but since it has been used for the past 30 years, the material has not had to be renewed and it is safe to say that its durability is high.

Sjótækni used the material Humidur to paint steel pieces in the bridge over the eastern estuary of Héraðsvatn in Skagafjörður last year. All work processes were recorded and various measurements of the material were performed during the coating of the steel pieces to get a better view of the use of the material. The intention is to monitor how the material turns out in Icelandic conditions over the next three years with measurements and photography. The attached report shows how Humidur was used to coat the steel pieces in the bridge and the measurements made during the construction.

Interested parties are encouraged to contact Sjótækni to familiarize themselves with the material Humidur and its use. You can also see information about the material and its use here on Sjótækni's website under the tab Mannvirki.

Various projects at Sjótækni

It is safe to say that the weather has been bad for Sjótækni's employees this winter and the conditions to work at sea have been stagnant. However, every opportunity has been taken to carry out the tasks. One of those tasks is to clean up the floats that have fallen from the pier in Patreksfjörður. Sjótækni´s divers picked up the tires that have fallen from the pier into the sea and lifted them out of the harbour. As can be seen, the weather was not particularly summery when the employees of Sjótækni were at work at Patreksfjarðarhöfn today, 03.04.2020.

Tálknafjarðarskóli has offered students in their teens an internship during the spring semester in collaboration with companies in Tálknafjörður. The purpose of the project is to introduce students to the industries that operate in Tálknafjörður and what education is useful in working in those industries. In this way, students can better understand whether they are interested in these jobs in the future. Sjótækni participates in this project at Tálknafjarðarskóli. The past Wednesdays Patrekur, Arnór and Einar Össur were with us and now Nökkvi, Alexander and Ola decided to join us.

Patrekur, Arnór and Einar Össur got to know the equipment and tools in our house and watched as the pumping station was being lifted out of Fálki BA and taken into the house to be inspected before the summer season. In addition, our barge was being hoisted onto a dock where its use was completed. The second Wednesday they got to go on board on Haukur BA and try out our cleaning robot and take a look at everything that our boat has to offer.

Nökkvi, Alexander and Ola came to us on Wednesday 11.03.2020 and when they had gotten to know the indoor activities of Sjótækni, they tried out the diving cabin and more, Guðbjartur and Marteinn took them to a lesson on knots and splicing. Knowing pelastik and other knots is necessary for every fisherman, and no less important for knitting ropes and strings. The vocational training went well for the kids and they are promising in knots and splicing.

Due to the risk of virus transmission, internships have been postponed indefinitely, so no more people will come to us at Sjótækni while this situation lasts, but hopefully it will be possible to pick up the thread again in the spring and we will have more kids visit us. We at Sjótækni thank the kids who have come to us for a good acquaintance and hope that they have benefited and enjoyed it.
