Sjótækni partakes in testing environmentally friendly epiphyte protection

Sjótækni and the start-up company Hripa ehf. are now collaborating to test a new type of environmentally friendly epiphyte protection for use in the sea. The start-up company Hripa ehf. has, with a grant from the Technology Development Fund, developed a protection without any toxins, which can harm the environment and organisms in the sea. In collaboration with Náttúrustofa Vestfjarða and with assistance from the companies Arctic Fish and Egersund Ísland, Hripa has conducted tests with the attachment protection for aquaculture nets for the past two years and the results are very positive.

When the research vessel Kafari BA was launched in Njarðvík last March, the protection from Hripa was applied to certain areas below the sea line on both sides of the boat and it will be interesting to see how it works there compared to normal bottom paint.

Hripa has applied for an international patent for the epiphyte protection and various further studies are currently underway on the effectiveness of the epiphyte protection, as well as harmlessness towards fish and other marine life in collaboration with other parties in Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

Sjótækni places great emphasis on minimizing the environmental impact of its operations and that the materials and products used by the company have the least possible environmental impact. It is therefore very positive and in accordance with Sjótækni's environmental policy to assist in the development of environmentally friendly protection, which is much needed.

Sjótækni´s survey boat has been on the move in Ísafjarðardjúp this winter to map possible areas for fish farming. When it comes to examining the bottom and conditions for a quay, Sjótækni's survey boat comes in handy. Of course, good weather conditions helped with the work and the mountains at Ísafjarðardjúp put their sun hats on to celebrate the day.

Previously, receptions had been held in Reykjavík Harbour and Akranes, where Sjótækni's customers and benefactors were invited to come and see the ship and receive refreshments. A large number of people came on board both times and liked the new boat. Kjartan J. Hauksson, CEO of Sjótækni, would like to thank everyone for coming and rejoicing with us at Sjótækni on the occasion of the arrival of the new ship. More photos from the reception in Reykjavík and Tálknafjörður can be found here on the website under Photos and „Vinnubáturinn Valur“.

Sjótækni's new work boat, Valur, arrived in Iceland this weekend and was hoisted from the deck of a cargo ship in Berufjörður on Sunday. The CEO of Sjótækni, Kjartan J. Hauksson, received the boat together with the employees of Sjótækni, Guðbjartur Ásgeirsson, service manager and Marteinn Þór Ásgeirsson, fleet manager. They then sailed the boat to the harbour in Djúpivogur where oil was taken and then they set off for the Westman Islands, which was the first stage on the way west to Tálknafjörður. Kjartan is the captain of the voyage, Marteinn the chief mate and Guðbjartur the chief engineer. The boat had proved successful in this first voyage off the coast of Iceland and the voyage to Eyjar went well despite the bad weather conditions on the way.

Valur is a powerful workboat that can service the aquaculture facilities and work on the installation of new pens and their attachments as well as various other projects that Sjótækni deals with. The work boat is a Catamaran NABCAT 1510 DD from Moen Marin in Norway and is 15 m long and 10 m wide. The work boat is double-hulled and equipped with powerful engines as well as cranes and equipment for setting up and stretching system mounts for docks. There are good facilities for the crew on board and the crew did well in this first voyage of the boat from Djúpivogur to the Westman Islands. The plan is to sail the boat to Reykjavík and from there west to Tálknafjörður as soon as the weather allows. As soon as Valur comes west, he goes on a project in Dýrafjörður for Arctic fish.

In recent weeks, the boat Kafari BA has been in a shipyard in Njarðvík for repairs and improvements. The propeller was repaired, the cap stan got inspected and repaired, and the water tank was cleaned. There were also improvements to the railing and the side of the boat, which was slightly extended, as well as improvements were made to the wheelhouse and windows of the wheelhouse. Finally, Kafari BA was completely painted.

Kafari BA was built in Seyðisfjörður in 1979 and served as a ferry between Árskógsströnd and Hrísey in the beginning, but since 2008 it has been registered as a research vessel and has been used in various projects at Sjótækni such as diving, laying submarine cables and monitoring pipelines at sea for various purposes all over the country.

Kafari BA was launched in Njarðvík this morning, March 4, after the repairs and will go straight to projects that await him. Another great news is that Sjótækni's new boat, Valur, which is built in Norway, was also coming out of a shipyard in Norway and was put on board a cargo ship this morning that will transport it to Iceland.

A great milestone was reached in the collaboration between Sjótækni ehf. and the aquaculture companies Arnarlax and Arctic fish when the companies' representatives recently signed service agreements in Ísafjörður. Sjótækni has provided various services for the fish farming companies in the Westfjords in recent years, and these agreements cover the tasks that need to be carried out. The agreements are valid for four years and include increased opportunities for development in Sjótækni's services and equipment.

Sjótækni is an ocean-going contractor that performs installation, monitoring, maintenance and service of various structures in sea and water for companies, institutions and municipalities as well as operating powerful diving services. The company serves both large and small buyers for various projects throughout the country and abroad, depending on the buyers' needs. Construction is related to, among other things, aquaculture, underwater pipelines, structures in sea and water, shipping services, power plants and heavy industry. The company manufactures boats, work ships, barges, service vehicles and a lot of specialized equipment, such as sea and water measuring equipment of the most advanced type. Sjótækni ehf. has headquarters in Tálknafjörður.

Sjótækni is located in Hafnarhúsið in Tálknafjörður and improvements have been made so that the building can better accommodate the company's operations and equipment. An important investment in Sjótækni is ahead, as agreements have been concluded for the construction of the company's new workboat in Norway. This is a powerful workboat that can provide services to the aquaculture facilities and work on the installation of new pens and their attachments, as well as various other projects that Sjótækni deals with. The work boat is a Catamaran NABCAT 1510 DD from Moen Marin in Norway and is 15 m long and 10 m wide. The work boat is double-hulled and equipped with powerful engines as well as cranes and equipment for setting up and stretching system mounts for docks. There will be good facilities for the crew on board and the boat will facilitate all work at Sjótækni for the fish farming companies. The boat is expected to arrive in Iceland in March 2021 and we look forward to tackling future projects with anticipation.

With these agreements, Sjótækni with the aquaculture companies Arnarlax and Arctic fish continues the good co-operation that the companies have had for years.

This autumn, Sjótækni's employees worked on laying pipelines in the harbor at Bíldudalur in connection with Arnarlax's operations. The work was complex and multifaceted, including the need to weld the pipes together, put weights on them to sink the pipes and then put everything in place. When the pipes were finished at the pier, the pipes then had to be brought through the steel wall that is being driven down and fastened. During the work, various tools and equipment, excavators and cranes were used as well as divers and welders and the boat Kafari BA, which is useful in such projects.
